The girl in the mirror stares at me
I stare back
“Why are you putting that on?”
she asks
“So I can be pretty,”
I reply
“You already are,”
she says, her voice softens
“Not to him.”
My voice falters
Why do I even care what he thinks
He can’t even remember I exist
I apply the blush
Her hand reaches through the mirror
“Please don’t,”
she whispers
I still don’t know why she doesn’t want me to wear it
It’s not like anyone notices
I set the blush down
“Why do you care so much?” I ask
You’re the reason I wear it
“He does think about you, you know.”
Bombs fall
My face is full of flames
“No he doesn’t,”
I say
My hopes are already too high
Too late
Too late
My mind teases
I sigh
“I can’t be who you think I am.”
She pauses
“You don’t have to be.”
She smiles, her face frozen in adoration
The girl in the mirror stares at me
I stare back
She smiles
I smile back
